Map Orthophoto Distortion

App: Dronelink
Method: Map
Altitude: 50m (ATL)
Speed: 15km/hr
Shutter: 3s interval (Electronic Shutter)

I am assuming that the map distortion is due to the electronic shutter at high altitude using 12MP camera while in motion caused the 'jello' effect of my orthophoto to be slightly distorted. I got this drone roughly 3 years ago and just got back into doing GIS stuff (no survey); can't afford a better drone yet. Other insight is welcome.

Bonus Story: After completion of this mission the DJI Mini 2 had to use evasive maneuvers (manually controlling to return to point) due to 2 bogeys (Falcons) in the air were chasing it. DJI MINI 2 survived the incident.

Edit: just had a brainstorm idea. I think i'll test next run with a stop picture motion.

I use the same drone for some work. How to do "stop picture motion"?

Are you only doing nadir shots?
Did you test with more overlaps?

in the dronelink app you must change the option to 'expert' in mission planning. in the 'map' waypoint selection you have the 'capture speed' option to set the speed during the capture. by default i've set flight time to 15km/hr but i can not modify the speed during capture unless i have plan called 'growth | enterprise' .. i'm only 'premium'

so same mission as original with minor changes;
speed: 10km/hr
shutter: 1/1000
iso:100

shutter is actually automated with dronelink 'map' mapping for a 75-77% front overlap with 70% side overlap. weather played a minor role due to cloud cover in and out with the sun so the shadows are different but it did an exceptional job.

my personal conclusion:
Drone: DJI Mini 2
Speed: 10km/hr
Camera: Manual vs Auto settings
App: Dronelink requires a monthly subscription for stop motion.

future prospects: Mavic 3 Enterprise + Professional package (monthly subscription)

in other words, dji Mini 2 has it's limitation due to shutter while in motion and software capture fees

Might look at Copterus or litchi for a pilot app to test. Copterus on iPhone had some similar features to DroneLink a few years ago. Possible has stop/pause for photo. I don’t know if it has android app version.

The best thing you can do to remove distortion near roof edges is to fly higher, if your target resolution allows.

i'm debating if i should fly lower and do it at 40m with 80% overlap.

So I did another school with the following:
Altitude: 40m
Overlap Front: 77% front
Overlap Side: 75% side
Speed: 10km/hr

Because of tighter overlap, the battery ran dry quicker, so no full school shot. However there is less jello distortion because of height. Looks like I'll have to stick with I have before upgrading in future.
